Busting Myths at the LCBO: Don’t believe everything you read

As we head into bargaining, you can expect to receive communications from theemployer that try to bend the facts to fit the story they want to tell.

Don’t be fooled.

One the team is at the table, we’ll use these fact sheets to keep you updated on the real story, not the employer’s spin.

Hear something from your employer that doesn’t sound right? Send it to us at: LBEDbargaining@opseu.org. We’ll make sure to get the real story out to all members.

Remember

The employer wants to stir up confusion and divide members against each other. So don’t let them. They know, as we know, that we’re strongest when we’re united.

Busting Myths at the LCBO: What this award is really about

Myth:

“The award provides the LCBO with the flexibility it requires to meet/the needs of its customers” – LCBO management

The Real Story:

This award isn’t about flexibility. It’s the result of a human rights complaint that will ensure equal pay for equal work.

Thousands of casual workers will immediately get an average wage increase of 9.5 per cent.

Casuals will no longer be stuck on a lower wage grid and will be able to reach the top Customer Service Representative (CSR) wage.

As well, the full-time CSRs who aren’t at the top of the grid will immediately get an average wage increase of 7.7 per cent.

This award is the result of members taking a stand to demand fairtreatment for all workers, and sets an important precedent for precarious workers across Ontario.

Busting Myths at the LCBO: Did the union agree to give up Sunday premiums?

Myth:

OPSEU agreed to give up Sunday premiums and open new agency stores in exchange for casual wage increases.

The Real Story:

We did not agree to end the Sunday premium or add a single new agency store.

In the November settlement, we only agreed to discuss these issues and hear the employer’s arguments.

After reviewing the LCBO’s case, we took a firm position that the employer hadn’t shown the need to eliminate Sunday premiums or close retail stores.

Did the union agree to give up Sunday premiums?
