The joyous festival of Eid al-Fitr begins for Muslims in Ontario and around the world at sundown on Wednesday, May 12.

The festival marks the end of Ramadan and its month of sunrise-to-sunset fasts. Ramadan encourages people to be more deeply caring by sacrificing some of their own comfort to better understand the plight of those suffering from too little.

This year, we hope it also feels like a celebration of the beginning of the end of the pandemic.

Social distancing and masks are still incredibly important, but evidence from around the world shows that vaccination is working. As we continue to get vaccinated, and continue to practice pandemic safety, we draw closer and closer to the time when we can all gather again to celebrate events like Eid al-Fitr.

Until then, we want to say a warm and thankful Eid Mubarak.

In solidarity,
